Llechwedd Du

The walk up Llechwedd Du isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the views. This peak sits above Bala in Gwynedd, rising to about 600 metres, and rewards the effort with proper panoramic scenery across the Penllyn valley and towards Cader Idris on a clear day.

You're looking at a straightforward fell walk rather than anything technical. The route kicks off from the lanes around Bala and takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace and how many times you stop for breath. The terrain is boggy in places - muddy underfoot even in dry spells - so proper boots are non-negotiable. On top, there's a cairn and the sort of expansive views that make you remember why you bothered with the slog uphill.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Families with younger kids might find the gradient a bit much unless they're seasoned hikers. The summit itself is modest - no café, no facilities - so bring water and snacks if you're stopping up there. Winter ascents require hillwalking experience; the slopes can be treacherous when wet or icy.

If you're based at Tyn Cornel Camping or Porth Eryri Glamping, both within five miles of Bala, Llechwedd Du makes an excellent morning outing before heading down to explore the lake itself or catching lunch in town. It's the sort of walk that works best in autumn or early summer when the weather's less moody and the bog slightly less grim.
