Arrochar

Mountains crowd in on three sides here, turning Arrochar into something of a natural amphitheatre where the hills tumble down to Loch Long. This small Highland town sits at the heart of the Arrochar Alps - a cluster of peaks including Beinn Ìme and Ben Vane that draw serious walkers from across Scotland.

The Cobbler might get most of the attention, but these summits offer equally cracking views without quite the same crowds. Ben Reoch provides a gentler introduction for families, while The Brack rewards those willing to tackle its steeper flanks. Rest And Be Thankful, just up the road, gives you the Highland drama without the climb - the viewpoint and memorial stone mark where drovers once paused to catch their breath.

Down in the glen, Loch Sloy stretches away toward more distant peaks, its waters often mirror-calm in the early morning. Mansefield Studios offers a cultural pause between hikes, showcasing local artists who clearly draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape.

Getting here from Glasgow takes about an hour and a half by car, following the A83 through increasingly dramatic scenery. The West Highland Line stops nearby too, making this one of the more accessible bits of proper Highland territory.

Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around Loch Lomond's western shores puts you right in the thick of it. You're close enough to tackle different peaks each day, yet far enough from the tourist honeypots around Balloch to feel like you've found something special. The mountains don't care what time of year you visit, but they're at their most dramatic when autumn mist clings to the corries.
