Tarbert

This tiny fishing village sits at the head of East Loch Tarbert, where the narrow neck of land barely separates it from West Loch Tarbert. Proper Highland territory, this - the kind of place where you can smell the salt air and hear Gaelic conversations drifting from the harbour.

Tarbert's main draw isn't its size but its position. The village makes a cracking base for exploring the wilds of Kintyre, with serious hill-walking country stretching in all directions. Cruach an Seallaidh dominates the eastern skyline, while peaks like Cnoc a' Bharra Leathain and Cruach Lagain offer proper climbs for those after a challenge.

Water's everywhere here. Loch Racadal lies just north of the village, perfect for a gentle afternoon walk, while smaller lochs like Lochan Laoigh dot the landscape. The archaeological site at Crannog gives a glimpse into ancient life - these artificial islands were once defensive settlements.

Getting here means a drive up the A83 from Glasgow, roughly two hours through some of Scotland's most dramatic scenery. Lochgilphead is your nearest proper town, about 45 minutes south.

Staying at one of the local holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into the village for supplies or a pint, but surrounded by proper wilderness. The hills here aren't for beginners - peaks like Dun Skeig and Cnoc na Cairs demand respect - but the rewards are massive. On clear days, you can see right across to the Inner Hebrides.
