Beinn Luibhean

The walk up Beinn Luibhean from Arrochar is one of those Scottish hill days that rewards you properly without demanding a full alpine expedition. It's a straightforward climb - around 950 metres - that takes most people three to four hours there and back, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath on the steeper sections.

What makes it work is the variety. You start through woodland, then break out onto open moorland where the views start to matter. On a clear day, you're looking down the length of Loch Long towards the Clyde, with Ben Vorlich and the Arrochar Alps forming a proper dramatic backdrop. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no cairn, just a rounded top - but the perspective of what you're standing above makes it feel worthwhile.

This is excellent for anyone comfortable with mountain walking but not needing technical scrambling. Families with older kids (11 plus, reasonably fit) will manage it fine. If you're after easier walking, you might find it more graft than your holiday allows.

There's no admission fee - you just turn up and go. The walk begins near Succoth at the southern end of Loch Long, a short drive from Arrochar itself. Weather matters enormously; in mist it's forgettable. Get decent conditions and you'll appreciate why people base themselves at Forest Holidays Ardgartan, just 3.5 miles away. Loch Lomond Holiday Park is another solid base nearby if you're mixing hill days with easier exploring.
