White Holme Reservoir

The water sits perfectly still most days, reflecting the moorland sky back at you like a mirror. White Holme Reservoir, tucked into the hills above Hebden Bridge, is proper moorland scenery - the sort of place that makes you understand why people move to West Yorkshire and never leave.

It's a straightforward walk that pays off. You get the reservoir itself, which is lovely in that understated way British reservoirs are, plus proper views across to the Pennines if the weather's on your side. This works brilliantly if you're based at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Old Chamber Camping. It's close enough for a morning or afternoon walk without needing to drive half an hour first. The reservoir doesn't have cafes or facilities, so bring what you need, but that's half the appeal - you're out on the moors, not in a tourist queue.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers, certainly. People who like water and wild landscape. Anyone wanting an easy introduction to the South Pennines without committing to a full day hike. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's real, and that counts for something.
