Waltham Down

The woodland around Waltham Down offers proper walking territory - dense beech and oak that feels properly isolated despite being just a couple of miles from Petworth. It's the sort of place where you can spend two hours and barely see another soul, which counts for something in Sussex.

The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and the paths wind through genuine old-growth woodland. There's no visitor centre, no signposting to speak of, no café - just trees and trails. You'll need an OS map or decent navigation skills; the woodland can feel maze-like if you're not paying attention.

This works best for walkers who actually enjoy navigation challenges rather than families after an easy hour's wander. History types might appreciate that you're walking through countryside that's barely changed in centuries, but don't expect any interpretation boards or archaeological markers. The main thing is the woodland itself - atmospheric and quiet.

Allow a good two to three hours if you're exploring properly. There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, though the land is private so respect the boundaries.

It pairs well with a broader walking holiday in the area. Woodfire at Westerlands sits just 2.5 miles away and makes a solid base for exploring this corner of Sussex. Graffham Camping is similarly close at 2.7 miles. Use either as a launching point for days when you fancy something wilder and less manicured than the typical South Downs walk. Worth the detour if you like your woodland genuinely untamed.
