Boxalland Copse

The woodland around Boxalland Copse is exactly the sort of place you stumble upon by accident while walking near Petworth, and then wonder why you haven't been back sooner. It's proper Sussex woodland - all beech and oak, with a decent network of paths that don't require a Ordnance Survey degree to navigate. Nothing fancy, nothing manicured. Just trees, space, and the kind of quiet that actually feels restorative rather than boring.

Walkers will get the most from it. The paths are straightforward enough for families with older kids, though very small ones might struggle with muddy patches depending on the season. You're looking at anything from a quick twenty-minute loop to a solid hour's ramble if you fancy exploring further. Spring is genuinely lovely here - bluebells if you time it right, though nothing like the showier spots you'll find elsewhere. Autumn's when the light gets interesting though.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Little Cowdray Farm or Glamping Holiday are both excellent - this makes an easy morning's outing without the drive somewhere else. It won't replace a proper forest expedition, but it's a solid addition to a week pottering around the area. Free to access, no gates or signs to speak of, which is refreshing. Allow yourself time to actually stop and listen rather than just march through. That's the whole point of somewhere like this.
