Limekiln Rough

The woodland around Limekiln Rough, just outside Petworth, is one of those places you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out - which is precisely why it's worth the detour. Ancient trees crowd the forest floor here, their roots creating a proper maze of potential ankle-traps if you're not paying attention. The tracks wind through beech and oak, dappled light filtering through the canopy even on overcast days.

It's walker territory, no question. The terrain is manageable rather than challenging, and the network of paths means you can tailor a route to suit your fitness level and time. Families with younger legs will find plenty to explore without it becoming a trudge. Bring proper boots though - the ground stays damp well after rain.

There's something about ancient woodland that doesn't require signage or facilities to feel special. No cafes, no visitor centre, no admission fee as far as I can tell. You turn up, park nearby if you can find a spot, and walk. That's the whole point.

If you're based at Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site just down the road, or Woodfire at Westerlands, Limekiln Rough makes an excellent morning expedition. It's the kind of place that pairs well with a proper pub lunch back in Petworth afterwards. Allow two hours minimum, longer if you're in no rush.
