Gravel Pit wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a formal attraction, Gravel Pit Wood sits just outside Petworth and offers the kind of Sussex forest that feels genuinely wild without requiring serious hiking boots. The wood is dense with oak and beech, the sort of place where you'll actually lose sight of the path for a few moments and remember why people used to think forests were a bit frightening.

There's no visitor centre or tea shop here - it's just woodland, which is exactly why it works. Families with primary-age kids will find it engaging enough for a couple of hours; older walkers get real value from the network of tracks that wind through without being relentlessly muddy. Bring proper footwear though, especially after rain. The canopy is thick enough that you'll stay reasonably dry even when it's drizzling.

It's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan around, which makes it useful rather than unmissable. Free to walk, unrestricted access, and genuinely quiet on weekdays. If you're staying at Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site just over the way, this is an obvious morning sortie before heading into Petworth proper. Even Wakestone & Wild Glamping, four miles north, has quick access via the footpath network.

Allow ninety minutes for a decent loop. Spring is loveliest when the bluebells push through, but autumn brings that particular wood smell that makes you feel like you're doing something properly restorative rather than just exercising.
