Georgian grandeur meets rural tranquillity in this West Sussex market town, where antique shops line the streets and the magnificent Petworth House dominates the skyline. The town feels wonderfully unhurried - proper old England without the tourist coaches that plague other National Trust destinations.

Petworth House and its deer park are the main draw, naturally. The art collection inside is exceptional - Turner painted some of his finest landscapes from these very grounds. But don't miss the working town beyond the estate walls. The high street has character, with independent shops selling everything from rare books to locally made pottery.

South Downs National Park stretches in every direction. Court Hill offers cracking views across the Weald, while the network of ancient woodlands - North Wood, Lord's Wood, and the atmospheric Limekiln Rough - provide proper walking territory. It's proper downland country, with chalk hills rolling towards the coast.

Midhurst sits just six miles east, a larger market town with more dining options and the fascinating ruins of Midhurst Castle. The History Column marks another slice of local heritage worth seeking out. For literary buffs, the H.G. Wells connection adds another layer - the author spent time in these parts.

Staying at one of the local holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're ideally placed for both the cultural attractions and the outstanding countryside. South Downs Caravan Park has decent reviews and puts you right in the national park. The town itself can feel a bit quiet in the evenings, so having a comfortable base nearby works well.

Getting here is straightforward enough from London - train to Pulborough then a short bus ride, or drive via the A3 and A283. The surrounding villages are worth exploring too, each with their own character and usually a proper country pub.
