East Grinstead

The railway line cuts straight through the town centre, splitting East Grinstead into two distinct halves like a Victorian planning experiment. This Sussex market town straddles the London-Brighton line with proper purpose - it's where Surrey folk come for a proper afternoon out and Londoners fetch up when they fancy something more substantial than Croydon but less touristy than the coast.

Standen House and Garden dominates the cultural landscape here. The National Trust property showcases Arts and Crafts architecture at its finest, with William Morris wallpapers and stunning views across the Weir Wood Reservoir. The house feels refreshingly unpretentious compared to some of the grander National Trust piles further south.

Outside town, the countryside opens up into proper rolling Sussex Weald. Weir Wood Reservoir offers decent walking, though it's more functional than scenic - don't expect dramatic vistas. The area around Ardingly Reservoir & Ouse Valley provides better rambling territory, especially if you fancy a longer trek through working farmland.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. The train from London Victoria takes about an hour, making this surprisingly accessible for a town that feels genuinely rural. Brighton's just 40 minutes south when you need a coastal fix.

Staying at one of the local campsites makes perfect sense for exploring this corner of West Sussex. You're within striking distance of Gatwick (useful for early flights), the South Downs are a short drive away, and you can potter around local curiosities like the Largest Growing Christmas Tree in England without the pressure of day-trip timing. The town itself won't occupy you for a fortnight, but as a base for the wider area, it works brilliantly.
