Tumbling Paddy

The Tumbling Paddy is a waterfall on the Cloghmore River just outside Newry, and it's exactly what the name suggests - water tumbling over rocks in a proper cascade. You can see it from the walking trail that runs alongside the river, and it's the sort of spot where you'd stop for five minutes, take some photos, and move on unless you're really into waterfall spotting.

It works best as part of a longer riverside walk rather than a destination in itself. The falls aren't dramatic enough to warrant a special trip from far away, but if you're already in Newry or staying nearby, it's worth knowing about. Kids will find it interesting for about ten minutes - the water's quite something after heavy rain, but in dry spells it's less impressive.

The walk to reach it is straightforward and doesn't demand serious hiking boots, which makes it accessible to most fitness levels. Allow thirty minutes there and back from the nearest road access, though you could easily spend longer exploring the river path if you're in no rush.

If you're staying at Greenview Glamping just 1.6 miles away, this becomes a useful local walk that fills a lazy afternoon. Oakwood over in the Mourne Mountains is further afield but puts you in genuinely dramatic landscape - the Tumbling Paddy is pleasant enough, but it's not competing with what those mountains offer. Free to visit, no facilities, best after rain when the water's running properly.
