Wee Slievemoughan

The walk up Wee Slievemoughan is a proper leg-stretcher without punishing you for it. At around 619 metres, it's the sort of peak that gives you real views of the Mourne Mountains and beyond without eating up your whole afternoon. Starting from near Newry, the ascent is steep in patches but nothing that'll leave you cursing your fitness levels. The summit rewards you with sight lines across County Down and, on a clear day, you can clock distant peaks that make the climb feel worthwhile.

This is walker territory, really. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage it fine, though anyone under that might find the rocky sections tedious. Older folk who still fancy a proper hike rather than a gentle amble will get something genuine here - no crowded tourist trail, just a decent mountain with honest views.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit itself, so bring water and something to eat. The surrounding landscape is all moorland and heather, which means the weather can turn quickly. Go early in the day if you can, especially in winter when daylight runs out fast.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Greenview or Oakwood in the Mourne Mountains, Wee Slievemoughan works brilliantly as a morning walk before you head elsewhere. It's close enough to Newry to fit around other plans, and it'll take you two to three hours round trip. Not Instagram famous, which is exactly what makes it worth doing.
