Slievemoughanmore

The walk up Slievemoughanmore rewards you with proper views across the Mourne Mountains and down towards Newry. It's not the highest peak in the range, but that's rather the point - the climb is manageable without being a slog, and you're not battling crowds of serious hikers to get there.

This is walking terrain pure and simple. Grassland and moorland, some boggy sections if it's been wet, decent paths in places and rougher ground elsewhere. Allow a couple of hours up and back depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The summit itself is a modest affair - no dramatic rocky outcrops, just space to stand and take in the landscape around you. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort. On a grey day, well, bring a flask.

Families with teenagers or fit walkers will get most from it. Young children might find the bog bits tedious, and it's not the sort of peak that feels like an achievement for beginners. The mountain itself is free to access - you simply park and walk. No facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat if you're making a proper morning of it.

Stay at one of the nearby glamping spots like Greenview or Oakwood - both within easy striking distance - and you've got a solid day out combining the walk with the broader Mourne Mountains landscape. It pairs well with other peaks in the area if you're spending a few days in the region.
