Finlieve More

The walk up Finlieve More isn't a scramble, but it's properly steep once you commit to it. You're looking at a solid peak in the Mourne Mountains just outside Newry, with views that stretch across the whole range if the weather plays ball. On a clear day you can see right out to the Irish Sea - on a grey one, which is fairly often round here, you get a lot of cloud and the sense that you've earned something.

It's the kind of hill that rewards walkers more than casual strollers. Budget a good couple of hours for the round trip, longer if you're stopping for photos or taking it easy. The terrain is rough underfoot - bog and loose stone - so proper boots matter. Families with younger kids might find the gradient a bit much; teenagers and adults who enjoy a proper walk will get the most from it.

Stay at Kilbroney or Oakwood glamping in the Mourne Mountains - both are minutes away - and you can knock this off as part of a bigger day out. The whole range has excellent walking, so you're not betting everything on one hill. Newry itself is your nearest town for supplies, about three miles back down the road. There's no visitor centre or cafe at the summit, so bring water and something to eat. Free to access, naturally.
