Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark

The Mourne and Gullion Geopark spreads across 350 square kilometres of County Down, and it's genuinely one of those places where geology becomes the main attraction rather than an afterthought. You're looking at dramatic granite peaks, volcanic landscapes, and ancient rock formations that tell the story of how this land was shaped over hundreds of millions of years. The park straddles the border between the Mourne Mountains and the Gullion area, giving you access to proper walking territory whether you're tackling the high peaks or exploring gentler valley routes.

Walkers will absolutely love this. The geopark designation means there's interpretation work done - you'll spot information panels explaining what you're actually looking at, which transforms a standard hike into something with real narrative. Families with older kids will get the most from it, especially if anyone's even vaguely interested in how landscapes form. Younger children might lose interest after an hour unless you're breaking the walk up with scrambling and stream-spotting.

There's no formal visitor centre charge that we're aware of, and you can access trails throughout the geopark year-round. Spring and early autumn are best - winter can make the higher routes seriously treacherous, and mid-summer crowds mean the Mourne trails get busy. If you're camping locally, both Camping Tollymore Forest Park and Greenview Glamping are perfectly positioned for exploration. Tollymore Campsite is also nearby if you want something more basic. The geopark works brilliantly as part of a wider Mourne break rather than a standalone visit.
