Hunshigo Lake

The water at Hunshigo Lake sits perfectly still most mornings, reflecting the sky like a mirror someone's forgotten to put away. It's a small freshwater lake just outside Newry, the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss entirely. You won't find much in the way of facilities or tourist infrastructure here - this is proper countryside, with access via quiet country lanes that wind through rural Co. Down.

Walkers get the most from it. The lake itself invites a gentle circuit, giving you an hour or so of easy rambling with decent views across the water and the hills beyond. Birdwatchers come here regularly too; the reedy margins attract wildfowl, and if you're patient you'll see more than the obvious mallards. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which these days feels increasingly rare.

There's no admission charge and no opening hours to worry about - you simply turn up. Bring binoculars if you've got them, a packed lunch if you want to sit by the water for a bit. It works nicely as a morning outing from any of the nearby glamping sites like Pine Tree Hollow or Escape, both within five miles. The Mourne Mountains dominate the horizon to the south, so if you're basing yourself in the area for a week, this makes a straightforward detour that fills a couple of hours without demanding much of you.
