Trawscoed Roman Fort

You won't find much more than earthworks and a sense of purpose on this hillside near Aberystwyth, but that's precisely what makes Trawscoed Roman Fort worth the drive inland from the coast. The fort once anchored Roman control of mid-Wales, and standing here you can make out the defensive ditches and ramparts that have survived nearly two thousand years. It's the sort of place that rewards patience and imagination - bring an OS map, decent shoes, and ideally some knowledge of how Roman forts actually worked, or you'll be squinting at ridges in the grass wondering what you're looking at.

Historians and archaeology enthusiasts will get far more from this than casual visitors. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards worth mentioning, and no café. It's just you, the landscape, and the quiet satisfaction of standing where legionaries once stood. Family groups with young children might struggle - the walk from the nearest parking is a bit of a slog, and there's nothing interactive or visually dramatic to hold attention for long.

The site is free and accessible year-round, though winter rains turn it into a muddy trudge. Allow an hour or so if you're genuinely interested, half that if you just want to say you've been. It makes a reasonable half-day addition to a longer Ceredigion trip, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Woodlands Caravan Park or Aber Camping. Otherwise, it's a detour rather than a destination.
