Brithdir Roman Fort

Grass-covered mounds and barely visible stone foundations are about all that remain of this Roman auxiliary fort, set on a hillside about four miles southeast of Aberystwyth. What you're looking at are the earthwork remains of a first-century AD military post that once controlled this stretch of the Welsh coast - though you'll need a proper imagination to picture legionaries marching about.

History enthusiasts will find it fascinating to stand where Roman soldiers once did, but frankly, there's not much to see beyond grassy bumps in a field. The site works best as part of a longer walk in the area rather than a destination in itself. Families with young children might find it a bit disappointing unless the kids are already keen on ancient history.

Access appears to be free, though information on site is minimal and you're largely left to work out what's what for yourself. Allow about thirty minutes unless you're doing serious archaeological pondering. The fort sits well for combining with a stay at nearby holiday parks like Clarach Bay Holiday Village or Aberystwyth Holiday Village - both under five miles away and offering proper coastal fun to balance out the historical exploration.

Best visited on a clear day when you can appreciate the strategic position the Romans chose, overlooking the valley approaches to the coast.
