Rhiw-Felen

The walk up Rhiw-Felen, just inland from Aberystwyth, rewards you with proper views across Cardigan Bay. It's not a difficult hike - more of a steady climb than a proper fell walk - and the peak sits at around 1,400 feet, which means you're high enough to see something worthwhile without needing technical kit or hours of your day.

What you get up there is the kind of landscape that made me understand why people move to West Wales. On a clear day, the sweep of the coastline stretches out towards Borth and beyond, with the Ceredigion hills rolling away inland. The ascent itself takes you through gorse and grassland, and it's a proper walk rather than a Sunday stroll - allow a good hour and a half, maybe two hours if you're stopping to take photographs or catch your breath.

This suits walkers more than families with very small children, though teenagers would manage it fine. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit - you're out in actual countryside here - so bring water and snacks. It's free to access and open year-round, though winter conditions can make the path boggy in places.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks near Aberystwyth - Dôl Swynol or Aber Camping are the closest at just a couple of miles away - this makes an excellent half-day excursion. Pair it with a morning in town, and you've got a decent day sorted. The walk itself is the thing; don't expect a cafe or viewpoint building at the top.
