Toothill Ridge

The walk up Toothill Ridge rewards you with proper moorland views across the Yorkshire Dales, though it's not one of those Instagram peaks you'll see plastered everywhere. It's a straightforward hill walk from near Skipton - nothing technical, just honest upland terrain that opens up once you get above the tree line. The ridge itself gives you sweeping vistas toward Wharfedale and beyond, the kind of landscape that feels genuinely wild even though you're never far from civilisation.

This is solid walking country rather than a destination in itself. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. It suits families with older kids who can manage a decent hike without complaining, and it's excellent for anyone after a bit of solitude - you won't fight crowds here like you would on the more famous peaks. Spring and early summer are best, when the moorland isn't waterlogged.

Staying at Howgill Lodge or one of the other caravan parks dotted within a few miles gives you a proper base for exploring this part of the Dales. Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits closer to Bolton Abbey, which makes sense if you want to combine ridge walking with a visit to the ruined priory and riverside walks. The whole area rewards a slower approach - pick a camp and use it as your anchor for several days' exploration rather than rushing through.
