Tievedockaragh

The walk up Tievedockaragh isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to make your legs feel it. The peak itself sits at 571 metres and gives you proper views across the Mourne Mountains and down towards Newry - on a clear day you can see right across the valley. It's a straightforward hike rather than a technical scramble, so most people with reasonable fitness can manage it in under two hours there and back.

This is walker territory. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of effort will get something out of it, but it's not the sort of place you take pushchairs or very young children. The mountain itself is fairly bare at the top - no shelter, no facilities - so come prepared with weather-appropriate kit and water. Early morning or late afternoon tend to be best if you want to avoid crowds and catch decent light.

What makes it worthwhile is the sense of height without the slog of climbing Slieve Donard next door. You're high enough to feel like you've properly earned the views, but low enough that it doesn't take all day. Newry is the nearest town, though honestly you're better based at one of the glamping spots closer to the mountains - Greenview or Oakwood both sit within a couple of miles and would save you driving time.

Go when the weather's settled. Rain rolls in quickly across these hills and visibility can vanish within minutes. Worth it for the walk and the views, but don't make it your only reason to visit the area.
