The Piers

You'll find the remains of Victorian-era piers jutting out from the shore near Grange-over-Sands, relics of when this stretch of Cumbrian coast was a proper seaside destination. These days they're mostly ruins - weathered timber and stone foundations that speak to a different era of tourism altogether. The walk out along what's left of them is straightforward enough, and on a clear day you get decent views across Morecambe Bay toward the Lake District fells.

They're worth a 20-minute detour if you're already in the area, less compelling if you're making a specific trip. History enthusiasts will find them interesting - you can practically see the Edwardian crowds in your mind's eye. Families with young children might find them a bit underwhelming; there's not much to do beyond a walk and a poke about. The piers work best as part of a broader wander around Grange-over-Sands itself, which has enough Victorian architecture and seafront paths to make an afternoon of it.

Getting here from the caravan parks is straightforward - Meathop Fell and Willow Tree are closest at under three miles, while Haven Lakeland and Holgates offer good access too. If you're staying longer term, pair this with walks along the Cumbrian coast or trips inland to the proper Lake District attractions. Free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter storms can make the approach a bit slippery. Best visited on a calm day when the bay's at its most atmospheric.
