Grange-over-Sands

The train pulls into this elegant Victorian resort and you know immediately why Edwardian families flocked here. Grange-over-Sands sits on Morecambe Bay's northern shore with the air of a town that peaked gracefully and decided to stay there, thank you very much.

The promenade stretches along the bay with those classic cast-iron shelters where you can sit and watch the tide race across miles of sand. It's proper dramatic when the water comes in - one minute there's endless mudflats, the next it's lapping at the sea wall. The whole show takes about 20 minutes on a good tide.

Behind the town, limestone fells rise sharply. Buck Crag offers cracking views once you've made the climb, while the gentler option is exploring the nature reserves. Meathop Moss has a boardwalk that takes you right into the wetland habitat - it's surprisingly wild considering you're barely 10 minutes from the centre.

Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve sits just north and it's where the ospreys nest if you're lucky with timing. The whole area feels like a forgotten corner of the Lakes, quieter than the central valleys but with that same limestone landscape.

Kendal's 15 minutes north by car, making this a smart base if you want lake access without the Windermere crowds. The train station connects directly to Lancaster and beyond, so you don't need to drive everywhere.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Hill of Oaks or Newby Bridge Country Caravan Park puts you right in the sweet spot - close enough to walk into town for fish and chips on the prom, far enough out to wake up to proper countryside views.
