Watersports at Low Wood Bay offers everything from paddleboarding to sailing lessons on England's largest natural lake. The water's surprisingly forgiving for beginners, and the mountain backdrop makes even the most wobbly attempts at windsurfing look rather dramatic. For landlubbers, the climb up Latterbarrow rewards with proper panoramic views across the southern fells - it's a gentle ascent that doesn't require fell-running fitness.

Eschewing the main drags, slip into the quieter corners where Esthwaite Water sits like a mirror between wooded shores. Less crowded than Windermere, this smaller lake feels properly peaceful. Nearby, Blelham Bog National Nature Reserve protects one of the few remaining lowland raised bogs in the region - fascinating if you're into rare plants and bird life.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. The A591 runs straight through town, connecting to junction 36 of the M6 in about half an hour. Buses from Windermere station arrive every twenty minutes during summer months.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense for exploring the central Lakes. You're within striking distance of both the popular honey-pots and the quieter valleys like Great Langdale. Plus, after a day dodging the crowds at Dove Cottage or queuing for cream tea in Grasmere, returning to your own space feels like a proper luxury.
