Latterbarrow

Standing at just 803 feet, Latterbarrow might not set any altitude records but what it lacks in height it makes up for in views. The summit offers a proper panoramic sweep across Windermere - the lake stretches out below like a blue ribbon threading between the fells. On clear days you can see right across to the Pennines in the east.

This is a fell that works brilliantly for families with younger children. The ascent from Hawkshead is gentle enough for little legs, taking about 45 minutes at a steady pace. No technical scrambling required - just a straightforward walk through woodland and open fell. The path can get muddy after rain though, so decent boots are essential.

What makes Latterbarrow special is its position between the major tourist hotspots. While everyone else is queuing for the Windermere steamers in Ambleside, you'll likely have this summit largely to yourself. The 360-degree views take in Coniston Water to the west and the Langdale Pikes beyond - a cracking introduction to Lake District fell walking without the crowds.

Perfect for a morning walk if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Windermere. Low Wray Campsite sits just over a mile away, making it an easy add-on to a Lake District break. Allow two to three hours return from Hawkshead, including time to appreciate those views properly.
