Devil's Gallop

Ancient oaks form a natural cathedral along this woodland path that climbs steeply from the valley floor near Ambleside. The name hints at something darker - local legend claims the devil himself once rode through these trees, though you're more likely to encounter red squirrels than supernatural horsemen.

Families with older children will appreciate the challenge. The initial climb is proper steep, winding through dense woodland where dappled light filters through the canopy. After twenty minutes of huffing uphill, the path levels out into a lovely clearing with glimpses of Windermere through the trees.

Don't expect manicured trails or waymarked routes. This is raw Lakeland forest at its best - gnarled roots, moss-covered rocks, and that earthy scent of decomposing leaves underfoot. Walkers looking for something more adventurous than the usual tourist tracks will find it rewarding.

Allow two hours for a proper explore, though you could easily spend longer if you're into woodland photography. The trees are spectacular in autumn when the light catches the golden leaves.

Perfect for a morning walk if you're staying at nearby Fallbarrow Holiday Park or any of the other Lake District sites around Windermere. It's the sort of place that reminds you why the Lakes attracted the Romantic poets - wild, untamed, and refreshingly free from crowds.
