Ancient woodland doesn't get much more atmospheric than this sprawling forest just outside Grange-over-Sands. Tom Wood stretches across rolling Cumbrian hillsides, its mixed canopy of oak, ash and birch creating a proper old-school woodland experience that feels miles from anywhere despite being close to the coast.

Dog walkers absolutely love it here - the network of informal paths means you can easily spend a couple of hours wandering without retracing your steps. The terrain varies nicely too, from gentle slopes perfect for families with young children to steeper sections that'll get your heart rate up. Spring brings carpets of bluebells, while autumn turns the whole place into a riot of gold and copper.

What makes Tom Wood special is its genuine wildness. Unlike some managed forests, this feels properly untamed - fallen logs create natural obstacle courses, and you might spot red squirrels if you're lucky. The lack of formal facilities means it's free to explore, though parking can be a bit hit and miss along the nearby lanes.

For families staying at places like Meathop Fell or the cluster of parks around Newby Bridge, it's an excellent free day out that burns off energy before heading back to base. Just bring waterproofs - the canopy can stay dripping long after rain stops, and muddy boots are pretty much guaranteed.
