John Wilkinson was the man who made it possible to bore cannon with real precision. That might sound dry until you realise it transformed everything from weaponry to steam engines. The site itself feels like walking through someone's workshop frozen in time - you'll see the remains of his furnace, the casting grounds, the sheer scale of what he was attempting back in the late 1700s. It's not a polished visitor attraction with tearooms and gift shops; it's raw industrial archaeology.

This works best for anyone genuinely curious about engineering history or the gritty side of the Industrial Revolution. Kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're already into that period. Allow an hour, longer if you want to properly absorb the detail. It slots perfectly into a Lake District caravan holiday. Meathop Fell is barely a mile away, so you could easily combine this with walks around the fells and time on the water. Grange-over-Sands itself is worth a wander afterwards - proper old-fashioned seaside charm without the crowds.
