Talyllyn Railway - Dolgoch Railway Station

A narrow-gauge steam train chugging through the Snowdonia foothills - that's the Talyllyn Railway, and Dolgoch station is where most visitors hop on or off. It's genuinely charming in a way that avoids being twee, mainly because the volunteers who run it clearly care about getting the engineering right rather than performing heritage for tourists.

The station itself is small and functional, with a proper workshop you can nose around and platforms from another era. The railway runs for twelve miles up a steep valley, and the whole journey takes the best part of three hours return. On a clear day you get proper views of Cader Idris rising up to your left - the kind of thing that reminds you why people bother moving to Wales in the first place.

It's brilliant for families who enjoy trains without needing theme park thrills, and walkers use it tactically to avoid the steep sections then hike back down. Adults keen on industrial heritage will spend longer than you'd expect examining the locomotives. Allow a full afternoon if you want the round trip plus time to potter about.

Head here from Dolgellau, about twenty minutes' drive away. If you're camped at Gwerniago, Sunbeach or any of the nearby parks, it makes an excellent wet-weather option or a break from walking. Admission isn't free but it's reasonable, and they run throughout summer months - worth checking ahead though as volunteer operations can be temperamental.
