Diffwys

The walk up Diffwys from Dolgellau is a proper hill rather than a casual amble, and that's exactly why it's worth doing. You're looking at roughly 2,000 feet of ascent through moorland that gets progressively wilder the higher you go, with views opening out across Snowdonia that'll make you forget how knackered your legs are.

It takes most people around two to three hours to reach the summit, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath or photograph the landscape. The path itself is well-trodden but can be boggy in patches, especially after rain, so proper boots aren't a luxury. The real payoff is the summit plateau - exposed, windswept, and commanding views that stretch all the way to the coast on a clear day.

This isn't the walk for young children or anyone after a gentle stroll. It's for hikers who actually enjoy climbing hills, and for those staying at one of the nearby parks like Hendre Mynach or Graig Wen Camping and Cottages who want to tick off a proper peak without heading further into Snowdonia. The moorland character means you won't find cafes or facilities at the top - bring water and snacks.

Go early if the weather looks uncertain, because cloud can roll in quickly and the plateau becomes properly exposed when visibility drops. Autumn and spring offer the best conditions: summer weekends get busy with walkers from the Dolgellau area, and winter demands experience and good navigation skills.
