Y Figra

Y Figra sits about two miles south of Dolgellau, a proper straightforward fell walk that doesn't demand mountaineering skills but rewards you with genuine views across the Cader Idris range. The peak itself isn't dramatic - it's more of a solid hump than a jagged summit - but the walk in feels good. You're moving through moorland with that particular North Wales light quality, the kind that makes the grass look impossibly green one minute and moody grey the next.

Allow two to three hours up and back depending on fitness. The route's well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though there's nothing signed, so a map helps. It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids and regular walkers who want something achievable rather than knackering. You'll get proper tired, but not destroyed.

Do it on a clear day. Honestly, if the cloud's sitting on the summit, you're better off going back to Dolgellau and visiting Rhaeadr Nantcol Waterfalls instead - they're worth the trip either way, and the mist won't spoil them. If you're camped at Graig Wen or Hendre Mynach, both within easy striking distance, Y Figra makes a solid morning objective before heading to the waterfall for the afternoon. Free to walk, naturally. Nothing fancy needed - decent boots, decent weather, decent company.
