Clogau

The walk up Clogau from Dolgellau is genuinely one of the best half-day outings in this corner of Gwynedd. You're climbing a proper Welsh peak - nothing extreme, but steep enough that you'll feel like you've earned the summit views across the Mawddach estuary and towards Cadair Idris. The mountain itself is ancient slate country, and on a clear day the perspective across the valley is worth every step.

This isn't a casual stroll. Allow three to four hours for a solid round trip, depending on fitness. The path starts near Dolgellau and climbs steadily through moorland, with the terrain getting rougher as you gain height. Families with older children will manage it fine; younger kids might find it a slog. Serious walkers absolutely should do this one - it's got just enough challenge without being technical, and the solitude up here is genuine.

Timing matters. Go early morning for the clearest visibility, or late afternoon when the light turns the whole landscape golden. Wet days are brutal - the exposed ridge becomes slippery, and the views disappear into cloud. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Graig Wen or Torrent Walk, you're perfectly positioned to tackle this as part of a proper walking week. Pair it with lower-level rambles along the Mawddach Trail for contrast.

Free to walk, obviously. No facilities on the mountain itself, so pack water and snacks.
