Swinny Knoll

Getting to the top of Swinny Knoll is a straightforward walk from Holmfirth, and on a clear day the views across the South Yorkshire moorland are properly worth the effort. It's not a massive peak - you won't need specialist kit or a dawn start - but it gives you enough height to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. The summit itself is moorland typical of this part of the Pennines: open, windswept, with the kind of visibility that makes you realise how much landscape sits between here and Manchester.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination that requires hours of your time, more of an addition to a longer ramble across the moors, or a decent half-day out if you're staying at one of the camping spots near Holmfirth. Families with young kids might find it a bit bleak if the weather turns - there's no shelter up top - but older children who like getting out properly rather than ambling round a visitor centre will be fine with it.

The walk itself is free, naturally. No fees, no gates, no facilities at the summit either, so bring water and stick to the paths. Spring and autumn are best for visibility; summer can be hazy, and winter brings mud that'll test your grip. It slots nicely into a broader walk across the moors if you're based at Secret Valley Escapes or Holme Valley Camping just down the road. Not a tick-box attraction, but a genuine bit of walking country.
