Stoop Hill

From the summit of this modest fell, the Teesdale landscape spreads out like a rumpled green blanket. Stoop Hill rises just outside Barnard Castle, offering walkers a proper workout without the commitment of a full day's hiking. The views from the top take in the River Tees winding through the dale, with the ruins of Barnard Castle visible on clear days.

Families with older children will enjoy the scramble to the top, though younger ones might find the climb a bit much. The path isn't particularly well marked, so decent navigation skills help. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, including time to catch your breath and take in the scenery.

It's a lovely spot for a picnic if you fancy carrying supplies up, though the wind can be fierce on exposed days. Best visited in decent weather when you can actually see where you're going and appreciate the views you've worked for.

For those staying at nearby holiday parks like Mickleton Mill or Leekworth, it makes a good morning adventure before exploring Barnard Castle itself. The hill won't trouble serious fell walkers, but it's well worth the effort for a taste of proper Durham moorland without venturing too far from civilization.
