Scarney Hill

At 420 metres above sea level, this modest peak in the Durham Dales offers a proper workout without requiring mountaineering kit. The climb from the nearest parking spot takes about 45 minutes through rough grassland and heather, with the path becoming increasingly vague as you ascend.

Dedicated fell walkers will appreciate the 360-degree views from the summit, taking in Teesdale's rolling countryside and the Yorkshire Dales beyond. On a clear day, you can spot Barnard Castle's distinctive outline to the south. The reward is worth the effort, though families with young children might find the unmarked terrain challenging.

This isn't a casual Sunday stroll - proper walking boots essential, and the weather changes quickly up here. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the views and catch your breath. Best tackled in dry conditions when the ground isn't boggy.

Staying at one of the caravan parks near Barnard Castle puts you perfectly placed for this walk, with Mickleton Mill Caravan Park just over a mile away. The climb makes for an excellent morning adventure before exploring the town's famous castle ruins or antique shops.
