Bail Hill

Standing at 1,804 feet, this windswept summit offers proper views across the Yorkshire Dales and Durham fells without the crowds you'll find on more famous peaks. The walk up from the road near Mickleton isn't particularly challenging - about an hour each way - but it's steady enough to get the heart pumping.

From the top, you can see across to Pen-y-ghent on a clear day, with the Tees Valley spread out below. It's not the most dramatic peak in the area, but there's something satisfying about having a decent-sized hill largely to yourself. The path can get boggy after rain, so proper boots are essential.

Families with older children will manage the ascent fine, though little ones might struggle with the distance. Keen walkers often use Bail Hill as part of longer ridge walks, connecting with neighbouring fells. Weather changes quickly up here - I've been caught in sudden squalls that came from nowhere.

Being just over a mile from Mickleton Mill Caravan Park makes it a decent day trip from your pitch. The village of Mickleton itself is tiny, but you're only a short drive from Barnard Castle if you need supplies or a proper pub lunch after the walk. Allow three hours total if you're taking it steady.
