St Tudwals Island West

You're looking at one of two rocky outcrops that sit just off the coast near Pwllheli, and St Tudwal's Island West is the more accessible of the pair. It's a proper little scramble to get there - the walk from the mainland involves picking your way across rocks and shale, which makes it feel like a minor adventure even though you're never far from dry land.

Once you're out there, the reward is straightforward: dramatic coastal views back towards the Llyn Peninsula, and on clear days you can see across Cardigan Bay. There's a ruined chapel on the island, though it's more foundation than structure at this point. Don't expect a long visit - forty minutes to an hour covers the walk out, a bit of poking around the rocks, and the return journey.

It appeals most to walkers with decent footwear and a head for heights, and families with older kids who don't mind a bit of scrambling. Younger children might find it underwhelming unless they're into rock pools and splashing about. The best approach is to check the tide tables before you go - getting stranded isn't really part of the charm.

Stay at NightSky Glamping or Tal-y-Fan Holiday Park and you're only three to three and a half miles away. It works well as a morning or late-afternoon diversion rather than a full day's activity. Worth the detour if you're already exploring the Llyn coast, but don't build a holiday around it.
