Plas Glyn-y-Weddw

The Victorian villa overlooking Cardigan Bay might look like someone's grand seaside home, but step inside Plas Glyn-y-Weddw and you'll find one of Wales' more surprising contemporary art spaces. It's free to wander through, which immediately puts you at ease - no guilt about ducking out early if the weather turns.

The gallery itself occupies several rooms across the house, with floor-to-floor windows that make you acutely aware of the coastal landscape beyond. Exhibitions rotate regularly, focusing on Welsh and international artists, so what you see depends entirely on when you visit. One moment it might be abstract installations, the next figurative painting or sculpture. The quality varies, as it does everywhere, but the setting alone - that light, those views - elevates almost anything hung here.

Art lovers will get proper value from a couple of hours. Kids might manage twenty minutes before wanting the beach, which is basically on your doorstep in Pwllheli. The walk around the grounds costs nothing either, if you're just after a leg-stretch and the sea air.

If you're based at Tal-y-Fan Holiday Park or any of the other parks dotted nearby - NightSky Glamping, Gimblet Rock, Brook Cottage - this is an easy morning or afternoon sortie. Open from 09:30 every day, so you can hit it early before the light gets heavy. Not a must-do, but if you're staying local and the weather's against you, it'll scratch an itch.
