St John's RC Church

The cathedral-scale presence of St John's hits you as soon as you round the corner onto Hill Street in Newry. This isn't a small parish church - it's a proper Victorian statement, all red brick and soaring Gothic Revival lines, completed in 1840 and still the most visually commanding religious building in the town centre.

Inside, it's genuinely impressive. High ceilings, ornate detailing, and that particular quiet that only old stone spaces manage. The stained glass catches light beautifully in the afternoon, and there's enough architectural detail to keep you occupied for twenty minutes if you're into that sort of thing. It's still an active church, so opening hours vary - worth calling ahead or checking if there's a service time that works.

Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth the ten-minute detour if you're already exploring Newry's town centre. History types will appreciate the mid-Victorian craftsmanship. Photographers get decent shots, especially from across the street. Kids won't linger unless they're genuinely interested in buildings, but they won't get restless either.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Greenview's only 1.7 miles away - it's an easy walk into town. The Mourne Mountains dominates the landscape around here, so St John's works well as a quiet pause between outdoor pursuits at Oakwood or The Rock. Free entry, obviously. Bring a camera and maybe five minutes of your time.
