Spring Hag Wood

The woods around Kendal are dense and proper green, and Spring Hag Wood is one of the better reasons to lace up your boots and head out from the town centre. It's ancient woodland - the kind where you can almost feel the weight of centuries in the canopy overhead. Paths wind through beech and oak, with the forest floor soft underfoot most of the year, though winter tends to turn things muddy.

Walkers get the most from this spot. There's genuine peace here, away from the crowds you'll find at the more famous Lake District attractions. The paths are well-maintained and easy enough for most fitness levels, though none of them are exactly flat. Depending on which route you take, you're looking at anything from forty minutes to a couple of hours. Kids aged six upwards will manage fine if they're keen on trees and a bit of adventure; younger ones might find it unremarkable after twenty minutes.

It's free to access, and there are no set opening hours - you come and go as you please. Spring is genuinely lovely here, with bluebells and fresh growth making everything feel brand new. Autumn's decent too if you like the darker side of woods.
