Kerris Hill

Rolling moorland gives way to a modest summit that punches well above its weight for views. Kerris Hill sits quietly between Kendal and the central Lake District fells, offering walkers a proper workout without the crowds that swarm the bigger peaks. The climb takes about an hour from the nearest parking, winding through bracken and scattered oak before opening onto surprisingly expansive views across the Kent Valley and beyond to the Pennines.

Families with older kids will find it manageable, though the final approach can get boggy after rain. Serious fell walkers might find it a bit tame, but it's spot on for those wanting to stretch their legs without committing to a full day's march. The summit itself is unmarked - just a gentle rise in the moorland - so don't expect dramatic rocky outcrops or cairns.

Best tackled on a clear day when you can actually see where you've been. The views back towards Windermere are lovely, particularly in late afternoon light. It works well as part of a Lake District holiday based at any of the nearby sites like Fallbarrow or White Cross Bay - close enough for an afternoon adventure but far enough from the tourist trail to feel properly peaceful.
