Elf Howe

Standing at just 364 metres, this modest fell north of Kendal won't set anyone's pulse racing - but that's precisely the point. Elf Howe offers an honest half-day walk with lovely views over the Kentmere valley without the crowds that descend on the bigger peaks. The route up from the village is straightforward enough for families with older children, though the final approach does get a bit boggy after rain.

From the summit, you'll get proper views of the High Street range to the north and glimpses of Windermere through the gaps. It's not spectacular, but it's well worth the effort if you fancy stretching your legs without committing to a full day on the fells. The whole circuit takes about three hours at a gentle pace.

Walkers staying at any of the holiday parks around Windermere will find this makes a decent alternative to the tourist honeypots. Parkdean's three Lake District sites - Limefitt, Fallbarrow, and White Cross Bay - are all within striking distance, as is the Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site. It's the sort of fell that locals love precisely because visitors often overlook it in favour of flashier destinations.
