Millrigg Knott

Rising above the eastern shores of Windermere, this modest fell offers one of those rewarding climbs that proper walkers appreciate but the crowds tend to miss. At 580 metres, Millrigg Knott isn't going to challenge any serious peak-baggers, but the views across England's largest natural lake are cracking on a clear day.

The ascent from near Troutbeck takes about an hour if you're reasonably fit, winding through bracken and scattered oak woods before opening out onto the fell proper. What makes it special is the perspective - you're looking down the full length of Windermere with the central fells rising beyond, and on the return journey you get lovely views back towards the Pennines.

Families with older children who don't mind a proper walk will find this well worth the effort, though it's definitely more suited to keen walkers than casual day-trippers. The path can be a bit boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

For those staying at nearby holiday parks like White Cross Bay or Fallbarrow, it makes a perfect morning expedition before an afternoon by the lake. Just a short drive from Kendal, it's the sort of fell that reminds you why the Lake District earned its reputation - proper countryside, proper views, and none of the tourist scrum you'll find on the bigger peaks.
