High Knott

Scrambling up this modest fell north of Kendal rewards you with surprisingly good views across the Kent Valley and out towards the Pennines. High Knott sits at just 267 metres, making it a proper afternoon walk rather than a full day's march.

Families will find this one manageable - the route from Scout Scar is well-trodden and takes about an hour each way. Kids who've mastered basic fell walking will cope fine, though the rocky sections near the top need a bit of care.

What makes High Knott worth the effort is the panorama. On a clear day you'll see across to the Howgills and down the valley towards Morecambe Bay. It's not Helvellyn, but for a quick escape from the crowds around Windermere, it does the job nicely.

The walk starts from the National Trust car park at Scout Scar - follow the limestone pavement first, then pick up the path heading north. Allow two and a half hours total, including time to admire the view and catch your breath.
