High Wood

Walking through this ancient woodland feels like stepping back centuries. High Wood spreads across the fell slopes above Kendal, its mix of oak, ash and birch creating a proper canopy that filters the Lake District light into dappled patterns on the forest floor. The paths wind naturally through the trees - some are clear enough for families with pushchairs, others more suited to proper walkers who don't mind a bit of mud.

Wildlife spotters will have a field day here. Red squirrels dart between the branches if you're quiet enough, and the birdlife is excellent year-round. Spring brings bluebells carpeting the woodland floor, while autumn turns the whole place into a riot of gold and copper. Children love scrambling over the fallen logs and hunting for interesting fungi.

From Kendal, it's an easy drive or a decent walk if you're feeling energetic. The wood connects to several longer fell walks for serious hikers, but casual visitors can easily spend an hour or two just pottering about. Free to access, naturally - this is proper countryside, not a theme park.
