Smaithwaite Hill

The walk up Smaithwaite Hill takes about forty minutes from the road, and it's one of those Lakeland peaks that rewards the effort without demanding mountaineering skills. You get proper 360-degree views across the Keswick fells - Catbells and Helvellyn on clear days - and the fell-top itself is wide and open, the sort of place where you genuinely feel on top of something rather than clambering through woodland.

It's accessible enough for families with reasonable fitness, though the final push steepens a bit and there's loose stone underfoot. Children tend to either love the scramble or lose patience halfway - depends on the mood of the day. Walkers will appreciate the views without needing a full day commitment; history enthusiasts will find little beyond the landscape itself, so it's not a destination if you're after ruins or heritage.

There's no admission fee or facilities at the summit - just fell grass and wind. Go midweek if you can; weekends bring crowds to this corner of Keswick territory. Early morning light is lovely, though afternoon often gives clearer views of the distant fells.

If you're camping at Threlkeld Hall Caravan Park or Ewe Love's pods just outside Keswick, Smaithwaite slots well into a wider fell-walking itinerary. It pairs sensibly with walks around Catbells or Skiddaw without eating an entire day. Allow an hour and a half from caravan park to summit and back if you're not lingering.
