Shanlieve

The walk up Shanlieve is properly steep, and the reward at the top isn't a sudden wow moment - it's something more subtle. You're looking across the Mourne Mountains from a vantage point that feels genuinely remote, despite Newry being relatively close by. The peak itself is modest compared to nearby Slieve Donard, which suits it fine. There's no café, no crowds, no visitor centre nonsense.

This is a hike for people who actually enjoy walking, not those after an Instagram photo. The terrain is rough underfoot, and you'll want proper boots. Allow a solid two hours there and back from the car park, longer if you're taking it slow. On clear days the views sweep across to Down and beyond - it's the sort of place where you notice weather properly, clouds rolling in, light changing.

Families might find it a bit grinding for younger legs, though older kids who've got the hiking bug will manage fine. It's free, naturally, and open whenever you fancy turning up. The best time is autumn or spring when the weather's more predictable and the midges aren't a total nightmare.

If you're staying at Oakwood or Greenview glamping - both excellent spots just up the road - this makes a worthwhile morning mission. You're not going to spend all day here, but that's rather the point. It's honest fell walking without the theatre.
