Scabbed Hill

The name alone should tell you what you're in for. Scabbed Hill rises above the moorland north of Skipton, and it's a proper no-nonsense sort of fell rather than a refined peak. The walk up is straightforward enough - nothing technical, but the ground can be rough and boggy depending on recent weather, so decent boots are essential.

What makes it worthwhile is the view once you're up there. You get proper fell country spreading out in all directions - the Wharfedale valley down below, and on a clear day the moorland stretches far enough to make you feel properly away from things. It's not a long walk, which means you won't spend all afternoon getting there and back, but it's not a stroll either.

Families with older kids will find it manageable, though younger ones might struggle with the terrain underfoot. Walkers after a quick moorland hit will love it. The bog sections are real, though - I've seen people turn back when they realised what their trainers were in for. Waterproof trousers aren't essential, but they're sensible.

If you're based at Wharfedale Caravan Club or Wood Nook nearby, it's an obvious choice for a morning or afternoon out. You can combine it with a walk in the valley proper rather than trying to make a whole day of just the hill itself. Free to access, naturally - it's open moorland.
