Saxon Deities

There's a chunk of Romano-British history sitting quietly near Buckingham that most visitors to the area completely miss. The Saxon Deities stone carvings are modest in scale but genuinely interesting if you care about how beliefs shifted when the Romans left Britain around 410 AD.

What you're looking at are carved representations of Saxon gods - the physical evidence of religious transition during a period when Christianity hadn't yet taken full hold. It's the sort of thing that makes sense once you're there, but feels oddly specific to seek out cold. The carvings themselves aren't flashy. You won't get that Instagram moment. But there's something rather moving about standing in front of them, thinking about how ordinary people honoured their deities in the centuries after Roman withdrawal.

History buffs will find it worthwhile. Archaeology students, definitely. Families with young children might struggle to stay engaged - there's not much interactive element, and the explanatory signage is basic. Walkers doing a loop through Buckinghamshire could easily incorporate it into a longer route.

Practically speaking, it's free to access. Allow 20-30 minutes unless you're really diving into the backstory. Spring through autumn is obviously better than winter for the experience of being outdoors.

Stay at Hedgehog Retreat or Dadford Road Campsite - both within striking distance - and you could combine this with walks around the Buckingham area. Neither offers luxury, but they're convenient bases for exploring the quieter corners of South Buckinghamshire.
